This work represents the end result of an all summer study of fireplace low mantels, researching antique fireplace mantels from 1760 to 1790. The columns are very basic in a low mantel, and are reeded in this example. To reach the level of historic accuracy required, among the most important measurements turned out to be the width of the columns. Historically accurate molding profiles, regional differences between Northern and Southern work, and many other details were painstakingly researched. The completed work represents a fireplace mantel that, detail for detail, could have been crafted in the 18th century.
