Architectural Woodwork

Architectural Woodwork by John Pavlik, Cabinetmaker

Owners of historic homes and reproduction 18th century homes share a unique problem with museums of early American art and architecture. How do you achieve period correct decorating, repairs to aging woodwork, or improve an historic setting without the expense of acquiring actual museum pieces?

At his workshop in Duck Pond Farm, Pennsylvania, John Edward Pavlik adheres to the techniques of 18th century millwork, including traditional methods of dovetailing and joinery that resulted in the Colonial and 19th century woodwork we continue to marvel at today.

From antique fireplace mantels to window sashes, doors, paneling, molding, and more, Pavlik Millwork Furniture can provide the individually handcrafted pieces your special project requires.

Please Contact John to inquire about starting a project for you, including (but not limited to):

  • Historic custom fireplace mantels.
  • Fluted columns.
  • Window sashes and doors.
  • Room ends.
  • 18th century molding.
  • And don’t forget to check out John’s American Period Reproduction Furniture.

We’ll work with you to acquire measurements for needed pieces; research the historical detail necessary to hand craft authentic woodwork; and even analyze fragments of original material from historic homes in order to match existing work to perfection. Learn how your project evolves from a tree to a unique American masterpiece in wood.

On this page you will find images and descriptions of some of John’s completed works, but the project we most look forward to is the assignment we hope to complete for you.

This work represents the end result of an all summer study of fireplace low mantels, researching antique fireplace mantels from 1760 to 1790. The columns are very basic in a low mantel, and are reeded in this example. To reach the level of historic accuracy required, among the most important measurements turned out to be the width of the columns. Historically accurate molding profiles, regional differences between Northern and Southern work, and many other details were painstakingly researched. The completed work represents a fireplace mantel that, detail for detail, could have been crafted in the 18th century.
